OBEY the Homies

Here are a few (non OBEY) categories and some OBEY endorsed recommendations

  • Hip Hop Promoter of the Year - IMHO most of these options do bigger shows and don't feature local artists. The only 2 that do are Hormi-Ghetto Familia and YoungMe. I have only personally worked with YoungMe, so that'd be my pick.
  • Videographer of the Year - This one has some heavy hitters. Though I have some close friends on the ballot (who you should totally vote for), being out in the scene it's hard not to notice Stuzz Media's impact on the scene. Much respect on the grind!
  • Recording Studio of the Year - SOL Studios is home. Super positive vibes. GMP Content Studios is another dope spot run by the homie Trnth - he does good work! Can't go wrong with either choice.
  • DJ of the Year - Out of this year's list, there are a few that put on for Tucson's artists. The club thing is cool too, but that's not my scene. There are also a few listed that are doing great as DJs, but haven't done much with hip hop shows this year. Given that rationale, I recommend DJ Looney or DJ Dre Day. 
  • Venue Of the Year - Brick Box Brewery, full stop. Great venue, known for supporting the Tucson music scene. Please go check 'em out! There aren't really many others supporting  Hip-hop on that level.
  • Hip Hop Group of the Year - A hard one, so many friends. AZ-IL has really put themselves out there, they're on most hip hop shows in the city. Hidden Hand makes awesome, high quality tracks with a distinct sound you'll love. Trnth & Brother Jossef are long time friends of OBEY! and Street Mob Military has made a huge impact in the scene. Listen to all and make your choice.
  • Hip Hop Label of the Year - Mythic Underground is a great label with some super talented artists such as Ill V, Nathan Villins and its founder joHnny Arson. They're great OBEY collaborators.
    GMP Content is on the come up! Check out their roster.
    And     Dope Shop Records is probably one of the biggest on the list, featuring Tucson-native Stacc Styles.
  • R&B Artist of the Year - KP Kai has quickly grown to be a super highly respected R&B singer and rapper. I've performed on a few shows with Janae through Light the Mic, and she's a great singer. I've known Brother Jossef for years now and he has a great voice, and energy on the stage. Can't go wrong with any of these choices.
  • Lyricist of the Year - It's a tragedy that I didn't make it to this year's list. This is the one that half of the city goes for - even though it's more about the vibe than the lyrical content with their tracks. So many dope artists here, but when it comes to lyricism, it should be based on the technical skill that goes into the content. That's multi syllable rhymes, double entendres, alliteration, flow, and substance. Others may make amazing music, but when looking for the technical, there are very few. Tommy Will is one of my top picks, but check out Cruz Ocho, Trnth, Nathan Villins, Spit the Rat, and Mickey Pimp. These are my tops in the lyrical category.
